In 2023, Russian courts received a record number of cases of escape from service

More than 5 thousand cases of escape from service were received by Russian courts in 2023. This was reported by the Russian media Mediazona.

In particular, in 2021, 615 cases were opened, in 2022 – 1001, in 2023 – 5024. The publication’s study indicates that all 5,024 cases relate exclusively to unauthorized abandonment of a military unit, that is, escape, while under the article on Another 148 cases of desertion were opened, which is also more than last year. Another 421 cases were initiated under the article of failure to comply with the order.

In many cases, convicts are given a suspended sentence in order to later be able to return them to the front.
