Five Crimean Tatars were left in custody until the end of April

February 1, 2024

The court upheld the decision to extend the arrest of five Crimean defendants in the Hizb ut-Tahrir case. Lawyer Emil Kurbedinov reported this to the Crimean Tatar Resource Center.

The court’s decision concerned Eldar Yakubov, Remzi Nimetullaiev, Ametkhan Umerov, Seidamet Mustafaiev and Ruslan Asanov.

“They upheld the decision of the first instance to extend the detention and did not satisfy the appeals of the defenders”,- he said.

He also stated that in their complaints the defense indicated that the Fourth Geneva Convention was applicable to the defendants and that Russia was violating it.

“People were kept in cages in violation of the convention. The court in the first instance and the second held its hearings behind closed doors in violation of the principle of publicity. The defendants did not receive copies of our complaints, but the court refused to postpone the hearing in order to provide them with copies and give them time, although the prosecutor agreed with the defense and also considered it impossible to continue the hearing without serving them copies”,- the lawyer explained.

In addition, he said that they want to keep all those arrested in custody until April 22.

We remind you that on August 24 at four in the morning, Russian security forces broke into the houses of six Crimean Tatars – Seidamet Mustafayev, Eldar Yakubov, Abdulmedzhit Seitumerov, Ruslan Asanov, Ametkhan Umerov and Remzi Nimetulaev. After which they were arrested.
