The Kyiv City Council is gathering proposals to rename 27 more streets, lanes, avenues, parks and squares whose names are associated with Russia and its satellites.
“This year, together with the people of Kyiv, we continue the process of de-Russification and decolonization of urban facilities. Kyiv toponymy should forever get rid of names associated with Russia and its totalitarian regime. In our city, it is necessary to rename all the streets, lanes, avenues, squares, parks, squares and municipal institutions, the names of which are associated with the aggressor country, which is waging a full-scale war on the territory of Ukraine. This decision will help reduce the propaganda distortion of history, as well as the perpetuation of Ukrainian heroes, famous figures and significant events”,- said Deputy Mayor, Secretary of the Kyiv City Council Volodymyr Bondarenko.
Among the new possible options are names associated with the Crimea. For example:
– the Square of Labor Glory in the Darnytskyi district is proposed to be renamed into the Pavlo Horianskyy square (founder and chairman of the Yalta Community of Ukrainians);
— Tarashchanets park can become Khaytarma park;
– Spartakovska – Bakhchysarai street.
The Crimean Tatar Resource Center calls on the people of Kyiv and guests of the capital to join this initiative and vote for these options in the Kyiv Digital application.
Voting will last until April 16, 2023.
We remind you that the Crimean Tatar Resource Center has launched and is actively promoting the information and advocacy campaign Return the names – Return Crimea, aimed at de-Russification, decolonization of Crimea and the restoration of historical toponymy on the peninsula.
