Crimean political prisoner Azamat Eiupov suffered four strokes in Russian captivity

October 20, 2025
62-year-old Crimean political prisoner Azamat Eiupov has suffered another hypertensive crisis. The man, who is being held in a Russian prison, has already suffered four strokes while behind bars. His hospitalization was reported by Alie Kurtametova, the wife of Tofik Abdulgaziev, who learned about it during a visit to her husband.

“My husband told me that Azamat Eiupov was taken to the hospital with high blood pressure. The man is over 60 years old and has suffered four strokes while in captivity. My heart aches with sympathy for this elderly Muslim man, whose only ‘crime’ is his faith,” – she wrote.

The Crimean Tatar Resource Center expresses deep concern about the health of the political prisoner and demands his immediate release, as well as the release of all illegally imprisoned captives of the Kremlin.

The CTRC emphasizes that the failure to provide timely and adequate medical care to Ukrainian political prisoners poses a real threat to their lives, as confirmed by previous deaths in Russian prisons:
• On February 7, 2023, Crimean political prisoner Konstantin Shiring died;
• On February 10, 2023, Crimean political prisoner Dzhemil Gafarov died;
• In March 2025, Crimean political prisoner Rustem Virati died.

According to the Crimean Tatar Resource Center, 61 people have died during the occupation of Crimea, 29 of whom were representatives of the Crimean Tatar people.

We remind you that on February 17, 2021, Russian security forces conducted seven searches in the homes of Crimean Tatars in Belogorsk, Bakhchisaray, Simferopol, Sevastopol, and the Soviet district of occupied Crimea.

Those detained were charged under Article 205.5 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation. The so-called Kyiv and Leninsky district “courts” imposed a preventive measure in the form of detention until April 15, 2021, on Crimean Tatars Ernest Ibragimov, Timur Yalkabov, Oleg Fedorov, Lenur Seydametov, Azamat Eiupov, and Yashar Shikhametov.

On July 19, 2022, Azamat Eiupov was sentenced by the occupiers to 17 years for allegedly participating in the  activities of  the organization Hizb ut-Tahrir .
