Crimean political prisoner and civic journalist Remzi Bekirov lost about 30 kilograms in a Russian colony

August 8, 2025
The Crimean Tatar Resource Center has learned of a significant deterioration in the health of Crimean political prisoner, activist, and civic journalist Remzi Bekirov. It is known that Remzi Bekirov has lost about 30 kilograms (he now weighs only 78 kg) in Penal Colony No. 33 of the Republic of Khakassia. This was reported by his close relatives.

“Due to the terrible food, his teeth are gradually falling out. He also has severe varicose veins, but the harsh conditions of his detention force him to be on his feet all day long,” – said his relatives .

“Everyone notices how much weight he has lost in the photos. Many people don’t even recognize him,” his relatives emphasized.

Inadequate and monotonous nutrition remains a particular problem:

“He hardly ever sees meat, dairy products, fruit, or vegetables. And parcels are only allowed to be sent once every six months, weighing up to 20 kg. In such conditions, it is simply impossible to provide a complete diet.”

In addition to physical difficulties, Remzi faces violations of his religious rights.

” He is forbidden to pray five times a day, as required by Islam. The internal rules of the colony do not provide for five daily prayers, and this is a direct violation of religious freedoms,” his relatives emphasized.

We were also told about the humiliating conditions in the showers:

“The shower doors have a transparent window through which the convoys can observe the prisoners. This humiliates human dignity and is a form of psychological pressure.”

The Crimean Tatar Resource Center calls on the Russian Federation to immediately release Remzi Bekirov, provide him with access to adequate medical care, and guarantee respect for his religious and human rights.

We will continue to monitor the situation and inform the public about Crimean political prisoner and civic journalist Remzi Bekirov, who was illegally sentenced to 19 years in prison by an occupation court.

We would like to remind you that after being transferred to Penal Colony No. 33 in the Republic of Khakassia in early August 2024, Bekirov was kept in solitary confinement (SHIZO) almost continuously.

On March 27, 2019, Russian security forces in occupied Crimea conducted searches in 26 homes of Crimean Tatars. As a result, 20 people were detained on suspicion of involvement in the Hizb ut-Tahrir organization, which is banned in the Russian Federation. In connection with this, the arrests of political prisoners have been repeatedly extended, and some have already been sentenced. For example, a Russian court sentenced Remzi Bekirov to 19 years in prison. He must serve the first five years in prison and the rest in a strict regime colony with a restriction of 1 year and 6 months.
