Crimean activists call on Instagram to disable monetisation of Russians’ accounts

August 14, 2024
The Crimean branch of the international movement for the deoccupation of Crimea #Liberatecrimea in an interview with ‘Krym.Reality’ called on the management of the social network Instagram to take an example from the popular Youtube platform and disconnect from monetisation the accounts of users living in Russia and the territories occupied by Russia.

The activists believe that such a decision should have been taken by the management of the social network Instagram immediately after the Kremlin’s decision to block Instagram in Russia.

‘It’s very unfortunate that Youtube has only now cut off financial flows for Russian bloggers. But better late than never. We have long appealed to the Youtube administration on this matter, we believe that these appeals of ours also had their influence in the decision to disable AdSense for Russian Influencers, the vast majority of whom support the Kremlin’s policies. We hope that our appeal to the management of the social network Instagram will not be in vain either. We will be glad if such appeals to Instagram will also come from other organisations,’ – told the Crimean branch of #Liberatecrimea.

The activists noted that even in Crimea, some propagandists of the ‘Russian world’ make huge profits from their resources in Instagram and Youtube.

‘For example, Youtube channels and Instagram accounts of the ‘Russian Crimea’ ambassador Oleg Zubkov and his press secretary Tatyana Aleksagina have millions of subscribers. Over several years, they have received hundreds of thousands of dollars in revenue from these channels, where, among other things, they promote ‘Russian world’. This is not the way it should be. We sent an appeal about this to the Permanent Mission of the President of Ukraine in Crimea and received full support. Unfortunately, these propagandists will continue to receive income from Instagram for the time being’, – reported in #Liberatecrimea.
