Crimea in scientific studies of the world

February 19, 2024

Friends, we are often asked where it is possible to get acquainted with the course of events of the occupation of Crimea in 2014 and an expert analysis of it. Therefore, we are starting a new column, in which we will tell you about the works and books of both Ukrainian and foreign academic researchers, primarily international lawyers from the countries of the civilized world, who carefully analyze the arguments broadcast by the aggressor state as part of attempts to legitimize the occupation of Crimea and their own actions in Crimea, and consistently refute them based on international law.

In particular, today we would like to present to you the monographic English-language work of Thomas D. Grant (Great Britain) Aggression against Ukraine: Territory, Responsibility and International Law 2015.

Thomas D. Grant is a scholar and practitioner of public international law. Grant is a Senior Fellow at Wolfson College and a Senior Fellow at the Lauterpacht Center for International Law at the University of Cambridge, UK.

“The occupation of Crimea in March 2014 and the subsequent armed invasion of eastern Ukraine under the cover of separatist movements in Donetsk and Luhansk challenge not only the territorial integrity of one state, but also threaten the overall settlement on which international law has rested for almost three generations. This settlement made possible the flourishing of human rights and modern institutions of international law. Russia’s domestic disregard for human rights and its new geopolitics of territorial conquests in this light should not be seen in isolation, but as interconnected events – and as a challenge to international law and the global social order as a whole”,- notes Thomas D. Grant, commenting on his research.
