Court in the Russian Federation refuses to release Suleymanov, whose health condition has significantly deteriorated

The Frunzensky district court in Vladimir has refused to release Crimean political prisoner Amet Suleymanov from Bakhchysarai, sentenced to 12 years in prison, despite the fact that he has two diseases on the list of conditions incompatible with imprisonment.

Since the moment of taking him into custody, the condition of the political prisoner “significantly deteriorated”.

This is reported by “Crimean Solidarity” public association, with reference to the defence lawyer Lilya Hemedzhi, who represented Suleymanov’s interests in  the court.

“Our argument was also that the medical conclusion, which after the transfer of my client to prison No. 2 in Vladimir illegally made by the FPS, has a contradictory nature. The data of the research part, conclusions made by narrow specialists, for example, a cardiologist, contradict the general conclusions made by the doctors who signed this expertise,” said Hemedzhi.

She stressed that the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) codes that the sub-specialised doctors wrote matched perfectly with the diseases that the prisoner cannot be in prison with.

“We sent another medical report indicating Amet Suleymanov’s diagnoses and analyses to an independent expert organisation. It confirmed the arguments of the defence that Suleymanov has diseases with which he is subject to release from punishment. But the court ignored it,” the lawyer added.

Lilya Hemedzhi also noted that the court refused to allow the defence to question the doctors who drew up the medical report at the trial stage in the first instance, and to question the forensic expert who had carried out an independent examination. Since being taken into custody, Amet’s condition has “significantly deteriorated”. For example, he has a new condition – hypertensive retinal angeopathy.

“This indicates that against the background of constantly high pressure, there are changes in vision. He cannot read, write for a long time, his eyes are constantly watering. There are more frequent cases when he has nose bleeding while sleeping and after waking up his pillow is in blood. He is not given adequate medical check-ups or prescribed medication, only relieved of his symptoms,” explains Hemedzhi.

Nor has he had the opportunity to measure his own blood pressure and enter the data into a self-monitoring diary so that he can take the right medication based on it. Amet is not taken out for walks, which he needs because of rapidly developing osteoarthritis of his lower and upper limbs.

The defence plans to file a cassation appeal against the decision of the Frunzensky court and appeal against the illegal medical opinion of the FSIN in the administrative order.

“With this approach, Amet’s lifespan is significantly reduced. Now it can go up to a maximum of five years. But given the deterioration of the quality of life, the term may end much sooner than it is written in the conclusion. We will do everything we can to secure Amet’s release. So that it does not happen when it will be too late,” – summarised Lilya Hemedzhi.

Recall, Amet Suleymanov – Crimean Tatar, convicted within the third Bakhchysarai Hizb ut-Tahrir group. The Southern District Military Court, despite numerous statements by the defence about Suleymanov’s health condition, decided to send him to a strict regime colony for 12 years.

In March 2024, the Frunzensky District Court in Vladimir also, as in the appeal, refused to release Amet Suleymanov from prison, despite the fact that his illnesses are on the list of those incompatible with the conditions of imprisonment.
