Cabinet of Ministers adopts resolution to ensure development of Crimean Tatar language

March 19, 2024

On March 15, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine adopted the Resolution “On the Award of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine for Special Contribution to the Development of the Crimean Tatar Language”.

According to the resolution, up to 20 awards of UAH 50,000 each will be given annually to those who contribute to the development and popularization of the Crimean Tatar language.

The document was developed by the State Service for Ethnic Policy and Freedom of Conscience as part of the implementation of the Crimean Tatar Language Development Strategy for 2022-2032.

This activity is especially important on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of indigenous languages, as well as given the fact that the Crimean Tatar language is on the UNESCO list of endangered languages. In addition, in February, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine adopted the Strategy for the Development of the Crimean Tatar Language for 2022-2032.

So, how do we contribute to the development and preservation of the Crimean Tatar language?

  1. Our website is available in the Crimean Tatar language: https://www.ctrcenter.orgqt
  2. In 2019, the Crimean Tatar Resource Center translated the Universal Declaration of Human Rightsinto Crimean Tatar and posted it on the official UN website. In 2021, we translated the European Convention on Human Rights into Crimean Tatar. We also plan to translate Ukrainian legislation related to Crimea and Crimean Tatars.
  3. The CTRC is conducting an information campaign dedicated to the restoration of historical place names in Crimea “By Returning the names – we’ll return Crimea“, which also contributes to the preservation of the Crimean Tatar language.
  4. Every week we continue our column “Dictionary of the Crimean Tatar Language”, in which we teach our readers Crimean Tatar words and phrases.
