An expert of the Crimean Tatar Resource Center, Yevhen Khlobystov, commented on the news about the shooting of red-listed birds by the occupiers on the Arabat spit, noting that this was a flagrant violation of all environmental conventions and agreements.
“First of all, the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands of International Importance and the Agreement on the Conservation of Afro-Eurasian Migratory Wetland Birds are violated. Russia has repeatedly neglected international environmental agreements, in particular, during the construction of the Tavryda highway, which we have repeatedly reported publicly. Shooting of birds that are on the Arabat spit, and there are several species of birds that are under protection – white swan, white-tailed eagle, Caspian martins, etc. – is clearly a crime against the environment.”
The expert noted that some bird populations are quite small, for example, the curly pelican (there are about 17 pairs), and the loss of several individuals can become critical.
