The destruction of the Kakhovka dam will cause many problems, – Bariiev

June 6, 2023

The Head of the Board of the Crimean Tatar Resource Center, a member of Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People, Eskender Bariiev, spoke on the air of the TV channel We – Ukraine about the consequences of the explosion of the Kakhovka dam

“At the moment, water supply in large cities of Crimea is on schedule, and its quality has noticeably decreased. After the explosion of the Kakhovka dam, the supply of water through the North Crimean Canal will most likely be stopped. It is worth noting that the destruction of the dam will cause many problems, because in 2025 a drought is expected in Crimea. The water that is currently flowing down collects many household objects, garbage and dirt on its way, this factor can cause the spread of infectious diseases not only in the south of Ukraine, but also in the Crimea. Due to the undermining of the dam, the ecosystem of the Kakhovka Reservoir and other water bodies has been significantly disturbed. Mass death of aquatic organisms: fish, molluscs, crustaceans and microorganisms is possible. It also threatens to disrupt the habitat of fish, molluscs, crustaceans, birds, amphibians and other animals”,- Bariiev said.

The expert also noted that the Russian Federation and the occupation authorities blame the Armed Forces of Ukraine for the disaster.

Let’s add that at the meeting of the National Security Council, they said that 150 tons of oil got into the Dnipro River as a result of the explosion of the Kakhovka HPP, and there is a risk of a further leakage of more than 300 tons.
