Eskender Bariiev, the Head of the Board of the Crimean Tatar Resource Center, the Head of the Department for Legal and Foreign Affairs of Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People, said during a briefing on the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples that the hysterical reaction of Russian President Vladimir Putin is an indicator of the effectiveness of the Law on Indigenous Peoples of Ukraine.
“This year, it is the first time, when Ukraine celebrates the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples as a country that can confidently say: “We are trying to do everything to protect and develop the three indigenous peoples of Ukraine (Crimean Tatars, Karaites, Krymchaks), not in words but in law”,” Bariiev noted.
He stressed that thanks to the Law on Indigenous Peoples of Ukraine, Ukraine can become an example for numerous countries where indigenous peoples are still struggling for their right to self-determination.
“Putin’s hysterical reaction is an indicator of the effectiveness of the Law on Indigenous Peoples of Ukraine,” he added.
Bariiev noted that Mejlis and the CTRC team have been actively working on the adoption of this law in Ukraine since 2014. They have systematically covered the problems of the three indigenous peoples on such international platforms as the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues and the Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples; on multiple meetings with Victoria Tauli-Corpuz, Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, dozens of reports to the UN, OSCE, and Council of Europe Human Rights Mechanisms on the Protection of the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
