June 5 is World Environment Day

June 5, 2024

Every year on June 5, the world celebrates World Environment Day. On this day it is important to draw the attention of the world community to the problems of the environment and emphasize the urgent need for fundamental changes in the human attitude to natural resources.

In the context of Ukraine, this issue is particularly relevant due to the aggression of the Russian Federation, which in particular is causing significant damage to the natural ecosystems of Crimea and the Black Sea.

The occupation of Crimea in 2014 and further military actions of the Russian Federation have led to numerous environmental problems. Pollution of the Black Sea waters, uncontrolled construction and military activities on the peninsula have significantly reduced the populations of many species of flora and fauna. Illegal resource extraction and violation of environmental standards exacerbate this crisis, threatening the extinction of unique species typical for this region.

One of the most egregious examples is the destruction of Crimea’s natural reserves. Chemical pollution, destruction of forests and disturbance of natural landscapes have a serious impact on the biodiversity of the peninsula. Disruption of the natural balance can have long-term consequences, including for rare species that may disappear forever.
Military aggression also affects the ecosystem of the Black Sea. The use of marine equipment, explosions and military operations lead to significant water pollution and destruction of marine ecosystems. This negatively affects marine flora and fauna, in particular the populations of dolphins, fish and other marine species.

This Day, we must realize that war and occupation threaten not only human lives but also our natural heritage. The conservation of biodiversity is not only an environmental issue, but also an issue for our future. We call on the international community to strengthen efforts to protect Ukraine’s natural environment and demand that Russia stop actions that destroy our unique ecosystems.

The Russian occupation of Crimea is causing irreparable damage to the ecology of the region. It is important to emphasize that the impact of these actions on natural resources and biodiversity requires our attention and response.

That is why the Crimean Tatar Resource Center has been monitoring, recording and analyzing the impact of the Russian Federation’s actions on the Crimean ecosystem since the beginning of the occupation of the peninsula.

Indeed, systematic analysis of air, water and soil quality is important to identify possible problems and the impact of the occupation regime on the environment. Only through this monitoring can we respond in time to threats to the environment and ensure a sustainable and healthy environment for the inhabitants of the region.
