Why is August 9th International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples?

On August 9, Ukraine and the whole world celebrate the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples.

There are about 476 million indigenous people in the world living in 90 countries. They are representatives of 5000 different cultures and the speakers of the vast majority of the world's languages, the total number of which is approximately 7000.

But who are the indigenous peoples? How many indigenous peoples are there in Ukraine and what is their status?
