What could be the consequences of hostilities in the Black Sea?

May 26, 2022

Since the beginning of the full-scale aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine, active military operations have been carried out in the Black Sea. How can this affect the ecology of the peninsula, as well as its biodiversity?

We remind you that the Mission of the President of Ukraine in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea reported that due to the destructive actions of Russian occupants in the territory of the temporarily occupied Crimea and in the Black Sea, a large number of dolphins and birds died in May.

“Even a cursory analysis of the damaging factors of military operations such as: direct physical impact due to explosions and collisions, acoustic (radar action) and noise (sound much higher than 85 decibels) environmental pollution, chemical pollution (as a result of missile launches from submarines) and explosions (warships) and the like, of course, indicates that all these factors, both individually and in combination, can lead and lead to the death of various representatives of the Black Sea fauna”,- commented Serhii Voloshyn, expert of the Crimean Tatar Resource Center.
