Crimean defenders were deprived of their lawyer status

August 3, 2022

The Chamber of Lawyers of the Chechen Republic has deprived defense lawyers Lilia Hemedzhi, Rustem Kiamilev and Nazim Sheikhmambetov of their lawyer status. Now they cannot defend their clients in criminal cases. This was reported by the Crimean Solidarity public association.

“The decision was made on the basis of a submission from the Office of the Ministry of Justice for the Chechen Republic to the Chamber of Advocates of Chechenia, of which we were lawyers. It turns out that the Ministry of Justice demanded to withdraw our professional statuses”,- said Nazim Sheikhmambetov.

It is noted that the decision was made without actual notice of the meeting. Lawyer Lilia Hemedzhi was notified a day before the meeting of the qualification commission.

“The law allows us to continue working. The only thing is that there are restrictions regarding criminal cases. But we are not determined to stop protecting people in Crimea”,- Sheikhmambetov explained.
