2021 was a record year for the number of detentions in the occupied Crimea – CTRC

February 3, 2022

In 2021, 366 detentions were recorded in the occupied Crimea, 330 of which were against Crimean Tatars. The dynamics remain unchanged, in 2021 364 detentions were recorded. This is stated in the analysis of human rights violations in Crimea for 2021 by the Crimean Tatar Resource Center.

A number of recorded arrests were made after the searches. Residents of Crimea were detained on suspicion of their involvement in the organizations banned in the Russian Federation: Hizb ut-Tahrir, Jehovah's Witnesses, for evading conscription into the armed forces of the Russian Federation, for justifying terrorism in social networks, assisting terrorism, for state treason, for committing sabotage, it is known about the detention at the administrative border.

Such a large number of violations in this category is also due to the fact that the occupiers massively detained activists who came to support their compatriots to  the buildings of the so-called courts, temporary detention facilities, pre-trial detention centers and so on. The Russian security forces held them for several hours and then released them.

It is worth noting the following trend, during the first day of detention, the location of the detainees, against whom torture is used, remains unknown. As it was the case with Nariman Dzhelyalov, Asan Akhtemov, Aziz Akhtemov, Nariman Ametov and Kurtumer Chalhozov.

We remind you that the Crimean Tatar Resource Center presented an analysis of human rights violations in the occupied Crimea for 2021. According to the organization, during the reporting period, the Russian security forces conducted 53 searches, 366 detentions and 366 interrogations, interviews and conversations. The total number of arrests for 2021 is 210: 25 new arrests, 40 administrative arrests, 118 extensions of detention, 28 sentences. There were 478 cases of violation of the right to a fair trial, 135 to healthcare access. Also, 37 cases of transferring of political prisoners of Crimea were recorded. Fines were issued 140 times.
