Shefika Gaspıralı – in the focus of the exhibition Women blazing new trails

December 16, 2021

The expert resource Gender in Details presents a virtual exhibition Women blazing new trails. It contains stories from the past and the present, showing how Ukraine developed in the XX and XXI centuries, and what role women played in this. For the project, 14 heroines have been selected, among whom is Shefika Gaspıralı, an outstanding figure of the Crimean Tatar national movement.

“Shefika Gaspıralı began her professional career helping her father, Ismail-bey Gaspıralı, in publishing. Subsequently, she herself published the first women's magazine in the Muslim world. She became the leader of the national and women's movements of the Crimean Tatar people. She was one of the four women elected to the first Qurultay of the Crimean Tatar people in Crimea, and the only woman in the Presidium of the Qurultay in 1917. After the Bolsheviks came to power, the memory of this figure was erased. We remind so as not to forget whose Crimea is”,- the project's website says.

A detailed biography of Shefika Gaspıralı as presented by political science Natalia Malynovska can be found here.

The exhibition also includes cut-out portraits of the designer Olena Marchyshyna, artistic biographies of Yevheniia Yaroshynska, Olena Stepaniv, Sofiia Parfanovych, Khrystyna Alchevska, Deborah Vogel, Olha Franko, and interviews with Anna Sharyhina, Mariia Berlinska, Maslianytsia Olyna Lytvyn, Svitlana Royz, Olha Hercules.
