September 16, 2021

On Wednesday, September 15, in the premises of the Yaroslav the Wise National Library, a presentation of a textbook on the history of Crimea and the Crimean Tatar people took place. Eskender Bariiev, Head of the Board of the Crimean Tatar Resource Center, spoke about the current situation in the occupied Crimea and about the persecution of pro-Ukrainian activists. He emphasized the importance of the campaign MP, Help the Prisoners of the Kremlin!, within the framework of which the MPs of Ukraine can take patronage over political prisoners and protect their rights.

The event was attended by MPs of Ukraine, members of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people, representatives of human rights organizations, activists and all concerned people.

During the event, Eskender Bariiev spoke about the situation with human rights violations in the occupied Crimea, about political prisoners who disappeared and died during the occupation of the peninsula. In particular, Bariiev stressed that now, according to the CTRC, there are 233 political prisoners, 165 of whom are representatives of the indigenous Crimean Tatar people.

In addition, a member of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people recalled the campaign MP, Help the Prisoners of the Kremlin!, launched by the International Movement for the de-occupation of Crimea and solidarity with the Crimean Tatar people #LIBERATECRIMEA. As part of this initiative, Ukrainian parliamentarians can take patronage over Crimeans who have been arrested or persecuted by the Russian invaders.

“It is important that at least one MP took under the patronage of one political prisoner and began to work systematically in this direction. Then we will see a concrete reaction from other countries, and as a result, European MPs will also deal with the problems of political prisoners”,- Bariiev explained.

The audience was shown a video MP, Help the Prisoners of the Kremlin!, prepared by the CTRC, in which specific proposals were noted on what the MPs should do within the framework of this campaign.

Also, the team of the Crimean Tatar Resource Center presented an exhibition of portraits of political prisoners, missing and dead people during the occupation of the peninsula.
