Will the Crimeans have enough water despite the downpours?

July 9, 2021

Expert of the Crimean Tatar Resource Center Yevhen Khlobystov said in an interview for the Hromadske Radio media agency that the question remains whether the Crimeans will have enough water despite the downpours. He stressed that the situation remains unstable.

“This water needs additional treatment, bringing it to a potable or technical state for supply to water pipelines. The situation is unstable. We do not know how long this precipitation will last. There must be a period of drought after the rains. What the condition of the reservoirs will be is also a big question”,- the expert noted.

Khlobystov stressed that today the reservoirs are filled with water. Crimea, according to the Ukrainian authorities, is ready for an uninterrupted water supply. But taking into account the quality of water pipelines and utilities, which have not been repaired since 2014, the question remains whether the Crimeans will have enough water despite the downpours.

The expert once again emphasized that the main reason for water shortage is irrational redistribution of available water resources.

“The huge potential of the military-industrial complex and related industries will require water and the occupants get enough of it without any problems, while for the civilian population there is a water shortage. Crimea was not designed for such a number of water consumers: during the occupation, its population grew by almost 800,000 people. This is quite a lot for Crimea”,- he explained.
