The UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine presented a new report on the human rights situation in Ukraine for the period from February 1 to April 30, 2021. During the reporting period, the HRMMU continued to record cases of torture and other forms of ill-treatment used by the FSB and penitentiary officials against political prisoners in occupied Crimea.
The report recalled the persecution of Jehovah's Witnesses and members of Hizb ut-Tahrir for professing their faith on the basis of accusations of extremism. They also noted that the authorities of the Russian Federation in Crimea continued to restrict freedom of thought and expression, citing the example of the so-called case of Bekir Mamutov, who was fined for mentioning the Mejlis in his newspaper.
The HRMMU reported that it continued to receive reports of torture by law enforcement officials of the Russian Federation of persons in their custody. The document emphasized on the so-called case of Vladyslav Yosypenko.
“The HRMMU received information that FSB officers had electrocuted, beaten and sexually assaulted him as a method of torture in the basement of an unidentified building in order to force him to confess to cooperating with the Ukrainian special services. In addition, the FSB denied the victim access to private lawyers for 28 days after his arrest”,- the statement claimed.
