April 29, 2021

On Thursday, April 29, at a meeting of the OSCE Permanent Council in Vienna, the US mission said that human rights violations in the occupied Crimea had become a daily occurrence and called on the Russian Federation to release all political prisoners.

“Unfortunately, in the Russian-occupied Crimea, human rights violations have become a daily occurrence. Crimean Tatars, ethnic Ukrainians and others are targeted by the occupation authorities and are persecuted, detained, imprisoned and even tortured for opposing the Russian occupation and the militarization of the peninsula”,- the statement said.

The United States recalled the recent verdict against the editor of the Crimean Tatar newspaper Qırım Bekir Mamutov for an article that referred to the UN report on Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people. The mission also highlighted the situation with Imam Yusuf Ashyrov, who was accused for the second time of illegal missionary activity.

“The United States calls on Moscow to release all Ukrainian political prisoners. We also call on Russia to end its occupation of Crimea and withdraw its forces and equipment from eastern Ukraine”,- the US mission added.
