In the first quarter of 2021, 113 cases of violation of the right to a fair trial were registered – CTRC

April 28, 2021

In the first quarter of 2021, 113 cases of violation of the right to a fair trial were recorded, 61 of which were against representatives of the indigenous Crimean Tatar people. This figure is lower than last year’s, but the very number of violations of the right to a fair trial demonstrates the illegal activity of the so-called courts in the occupied territory, by decisions of which more than 100 political prisoners of Crimea continue to be held in pre-trial detention centers and prisons. This is stated in the analysis of human rights violations in Crimea over the first quarter of 2021 by the Crimean Tatar Resource Center.

At least 10 people were illegally taken into custody, at least 19 verdicts were passed on the so-called cases. In addition, the CTRC recorded 16 cases of prolongation of detention terms. It is also worth noting that in the first quarter of 2021, the so-called courts continued to reject appeals and defense motions in the so-called cases of political prisoners in Crimea.

During the reporting period, Crimean political prisoners were placed in punishment cells and special blocks at least 12 times.

We remind that the Crimean Tatar Resource Center presented an analysis of human rights violations in the occupied Crimea for the first quarter of 2021. According to the organization, during the reporting period, Russian security forces conducted 22 searches, 146 arrests / detentions and 23 interrogations, interviews and conversations. The total number of arrests in the first three months of this year is 45: 10 – new arrests, 16 – extensions of detention, 19 – sentences. There were 113 cases of violation of the right to a fair trial, 51 – to the healthcare access. Also, 33 cases of transferring of political prisoners of Crimea were recorded. The CTRC report also contains information on the violation of religious rights, environmental norms on the peninsula, on inappropriate conditions in pre-trial detention centers and prisons, on the violation of the rights of political prisoners and illegal military exercises in the occupied Crimea.
