The US Congress called on the Russian Federation to release Ukrainian political prisoners

December 7, 2020

The House of Representatives of the US Congress supported a resolution that condemns the practice of imprisonment for political reasons by Russia in the occupied Crimea, as these actions violate the country’s international obligations in the field of human rights and the rule of law.

“The list of Russian political prisoners compiled by the human rights center Memorial includes journalists, civil society activists, human rights defenders, members of peaceful organizations and citizens of Ukraine from the illegally annexed Crimea. The House of Representatives condemns the practice of imprisonment for political reasons by Russia, which violates the country's international obligations in the field of human rights and the rule of law, and expresses its solidarity with all who are illegally deprived of their freedom by the Russian Federation”,- the resolution says.

The document notes that all US representatives should raise the topic of political prisoners in negotiations with Russia, as well as apply the Magnitsky Act or other sanctions laws against those who are responsible for imprisoning people for political reasons in Russia and Crimea.
