November 28, 2020

On Saturday, November 28, the Crimean Tatar Resource Center with the support of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom in Ukraine held the 5th session of the IV Academy of Public Diplomacy of the Crimean Tatars. As part of the work, future people’s diplomats were told about the role of visual language and design in international public information campaigns and the art of public speaking.

Andrii Yermolenko, Ukrainian artist, cartoonist, introduced the students of the Academy to the role of visual language and design in international public information campaigns. According to him, creating a competent and effective poster depends on a number of factors:

1. The poster should have a minimum of details: the poster should have one image that is quickly read by the audience and remembered;

2. The poster must be readable.

3. Using well-known images.

4. Repetition of the message that needs to be conveyed to the audience.

The artist showed participants specific examples of posters that were successful among different audiences.

After the theoretical part, Andrii Yermolenko, together with the students of the Academy, discussed a number of ideas for creating creative posters as part of the nonviolent struggle for the return of Crimea, the release of political prisoners and the observance of human rights on the peninsula.

Eskender Bariiev, Head of the Board of the Crimean Tatar Resource Center, a member of Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people, told the activists about the art of public speaking. In particular, the lecturer talked about what needs to be done to make an impressive speech, how to express common values in a speech, how to look effectively on the podium, and also shared tips for preparing a speech. Among the main ones are:

1. Connect with your audience by demonstrating that you have common values.

2. Prepare questions using expressions and words that will be understood by your audience.

3. Provide only those arguments that are available to the audience.

4. Name your opponent directly.

5. Having convinced the audience that your political rival is untenable to solve the problem under discussion, offer your own version and bring it to the optimum.

6. End your presentation by stating your programmatic goal.

The trainer also gave specific structures for preparing a speech for public speaking and demonstrated videos of public speeches of politicians from different times.

We remind that on November 7, the Crimean Tatar Resource Center with the support of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom in Ukraine launched the IV Academy of Public Diplomacy of the Crimean Tatars. The training included 6 sessions, during which qualified trainers and experts told the participants about the specifics and trends of world politics, human rights violations in Crimea, advocacy campaigns, international mechanisms for protecting human rights, the role of visual language and design in international campaigns, etc.
