UN General Assembly Committee approved a strengthened resolution on human rights violations in Crimea

On Wednesday, November 18, the Third Committee of the 75th session of the UN General Assembly approved the fifth draft resolution “The situation with human rights in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol, Ukraine”. 63 countries voted for the corresponding decision, 22 voted against.

Key provisions of the resolution:

– a call to the international community to strengthen interaction to put pressure on the Russian Federation in order to force it to fulfill its international obligations as an occupying state;

– the demand to the Russian Federation as an occupying state to withdraw its troops from Crimea and end the temporary occupation of the territory of Ukraine;

– the demand to the Russian Federation, as an occupying state, to stop human rights violations in the occupied Crimea and ensure unhindered access to international human rights mechanisms;

– a call to end criminal prosecutions for evading military conscription, condemnation of the continuing impunity for cases of enforced disappearance and a statement of the role of the Russian FSB in documented cases of torture;

– to ensure the availability of education in the Ukrainian and Crimean Tatar languages.

In addition, the Russian Federation is urged to provide on an ongoing basis sufficiently detailed information about the spread of COVID-19 in Crimea and the measures it is taking to ensure and maintain public health.
