NATO will not offer a membership to a state on whose borders there is a war – Linkevičius

October 28, 2020

The head of the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Linas Linkevičius, said in an interview with the European Truth media agency that the conflict in the Donbas, as well as the occupation of Crimea, prevents Ukraine from joining NATO, since the Alliance will not invite a state on whose borders there is a war.

“Of course, the current situation, the war with Russia, is not in your favor. NATO rules are such that the Alliance will not invite a state on whose borders there is a war – no matter who is the aggressor and who is the victim. Readiness will come if you keep the course, and the society as a whole will support it”,- the message said.

The head of the Lithuanian Foreign Ministry explained that so far it is not so much about Crimea as about the Donbas. Now it is a priority, since the war must end, and, importantly, its solution should not be at the expense of the territorial integrity of Ukraine. At the same time, he noted that the policy of non-recognition of the annexation will definitely continue.
