MP of Ukraine from the Servant of the People faction, head of the permanent delegation of Ukraine to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe Yelyzaveta Yasko raised the issue of the Ukrainian language in the occupied Crimea during a meeting of the PACE Standing Committee. She stressed that all educational institutions where the studies were conducted in Ukrainian were closed on the peninsula.
“Today, a meeting of the PACE Standing Committee took place, where we heard the report of the Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights Dunja Mijatović for 2019. I drew Ms. Mijatović 's attention to issues that, unfortunately, were not reflected in her report. As of 2020, the Russian occupation authorities in Crimea closed all educational institutions where the studies were conducted in the Ukrainian language, and left only a few institutions where they are conducted in the Crimean Tatar language”,- Yasko said.
The MP noted that about half a million Ukrainians in Crimea are deprived of the opportunity to communicate and educate children in their native language. The Commissioner promised to study and monitor this issue, however, the Commissioner did not express her vision of any concrete steps to protect the Ukrainian language in Crimea.
