The UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission has presented a new report on the human rights situation in Ukraine for the period from February 16 to July 31, 2020. During the reporting period, OHCHR continued to record cases of torture and other manifestations of ill-treatment used by the FSB and penitentiary officials against Ukrainian political prisoners in occupied Crimea.
“During the reporting period, OHCHR documented a trend of persecution of Crimean residents who resisted pressure from Russian law enforcement agencies and courts to force them to testify against themselves or against third parties. Courts in Crimea also continued to issue judgments with apparent disregard for fair trial guarantees”,- the document says.
The UN monitoring mission called on Russia, as an occupying state in Crimea, to stop persecuting the inhabitants of the peninsula for the peaceful confession of their religious beliefs and to stop conscripting Crimean residents into the Russian armed forces.
