Ukrainian Foreign Ministry demands the Russian Federation to stop repressions against Crimeans

July 7, 2020

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine strongly protested in connection with the mass searches and detentions of the Crimean Tatars on July 7 in the occupied Crimea. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs demands the Russian Federation to faithfully fulfill its international legal obligations as an occupying state, providing, in particular, for the cessation of repression on the occupied peninsula. This was reported by the press service of the department.

“Such actions of Russia are a continuation of repressive practices directed against citizens of Ukraine of the occupied Crimea, who seek to fully realize their human rights and fundamental freedoms. What is the norm for Ukraine and other democratic states in the territory of the occupied Crimea is regarded by the occupying state as a threat and terrorist activity”,- the report said.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs requires the Russian Federation to conscientiously fulfill its international legal obligations as an occupying state, providing, in particular, for stopping repressions against the local population of the occupied Crimean peninsula.

“We urge the international community to continue to actively advocate for the rights and freedoms of the inhabitants of the Crimean peninsula and to increase pressure on the Russian Federation to stop human rights violations in the temporarily occupied Crimea”,- the statement added.

We remind that on July 7, Russian security forces conducted mass searches in the dwellings of Crimean Tatars in the Bakhchisaray, Krasnohvardiiske and Simferopol regions of the occupied Crimea. Seven people were detained. All were taken to the FSB in Simferopol.
