Human rights violations in the occupied Crimea continue – Bachelet

July 2, 2020

On Thursday, July 2, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet stated that human rights violations, torture and other examples of misconduct by law enforcement agencies continue in the occupied Crimea. The text of the report is published on the OHCHR website.

“Violations of human rights, including torture and other examples of misconduct by law enforcement agencies continue in Crimea. This is especially true in all documented cases where victims filed reliable complaints to courts and law enforcement agencies, not a single criminal was prosecuted”,- the report emphasizes.

In addition, the international community is concerned about the ongoing criminalization of freedom of expression on social networks. Journalists and media workers continue to face interference in their professional activities.

It is noted that the Russian Federation has repeatedly violated international humanitarian law, while not fulfilling its obligations as an occupying country.

“The transfer of detainees from the occupied territory to the territory of the occupying state continues to violate the ban on individual or mass forced transfer, as well as on the deportation of protected individuals. The Russian Federation continues to apply its criminal law in Crimea, contrary to the obligation to respect the criminal law of the occupied territory”, – the text says .

Bachelet emphasized that her office will continue to monitor the human rights situation in Crimea, and she is “ready for dialogue with the Russian Federation as the occupying country, as well as with Ukraine, to strengthen the protection of human rights on the peninsula.”
