47 Crimean political prisoners have restrictions or probation – CTRC

September 2, 2024

Since the beginning of the occupation of Crimea, the Russian Federation has launched an active repressive campaign against the inhabitants of the peninsula, in particular, a number of administrative and criminal proceedings were opened against representatives of the indigenous Crimean Tatar people and pro-Ukrainian activists.

Among the victims of the occupation of Crimea, the Crimean Tatar Resource Centre identifies the category of ‘Crimean political prisoners whose rights are restricted outside places of detention’. In particular, this category can include people who have restrictions, probation, suspended sentence, administrative supervision or are under house arrest.

These restrictions are designed to make civilian life as difficult as possible for political prisoners after serving their unlawful sentence. For example, people who are under these restrictions cannot get full employment, medical care or even social benefits. We would like to add that the Russian Federation is using absolutely all the tools of the repressive machine for exemplary punishment for showing a pro-Ukrainian stance in Crimea.

Now there are 356 Ukrainian citizens who are being or have been prosecuted in criminal ‘cases’ for the period of occupation of Crimea, 47 of whom have restrictions or probation, 24 of them are representatives of the indigenous Crimean Tatar people.

We would like to remind that the Crimean Tatar Resource Centre on its website has developed clickable charts ‘Victims of the occupation of Crimea’, which are constantly updated and reflect the actual number of political prisoners, missing and killed people during the occupation of Crimea.
