June 4, 2020

The Head of the Board of the Crimean Tatar Resource Center, a member of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people, Eskender Bariiev, in his interview for the ATR TV channel, said that it was necessary to promote the early adoption of the law on indigenous peoples of Ukraine, which would give a clear message, including the amendments to Section X of the Constitution of Ukraine. According to him, the CTRC and the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people are ready to promote the involvement of the UN Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples for the examination of the draft law on indigenous peoples of Ukraine.

During the broadcast, Eskender Bariiev commented on the Resolution adopted by the Verkhovna Rada on appealing to foreign parliaments and parliamentary assemblies of international organizations on respecting the memory of the victims of the genocide of the Crimean Tatar people and condemning violations committed by the Russian Federation as an aggressor state, of the rights and freedoms of the Crimean Tatar people. The Head of the Board of the CTRC noted that voting for the Resolution is an indicator of the attitude of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine to the Crimean issue in general and the Crimean Tatar people in particular.

“Of course, this Resolution is not a bill to amend the X section of the Constitution of Ukraine. But there is the prospect that the IX convocation of the Verkhovna Rada can at least enact a law on the indigenous peoples of Ukraine”,- said Bariiev.

He noted that it is necessary to promote the early adoption of a coherent law on the indigenous peoples of Ukraine, which would give a clear message, including the amendments to Section X of the Constitution of Ukraine. According to him, the CTRC and the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people are ready to promote the involvement of the UN Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples for the examination of the draft law on indigenous peoples of Ukraine.

Bariiev also commented on the search in the dwellings of 65-year-old Crimean Tatar Sheide Asanova. The Head of the Board of the CTRC said that the occupying special services had finished their quarantine and continued repressive actions against the Crimean Tatar people. This search, connected with the so-called Noman Çelebicihan battalion case, testifies that the invaders will continue repressive actions and intimidate Crimean Tatars.
