The US Demands Russia To Stop Drafting Campaign in Crimea

May 22, 2020

The US Embassy in Ukraine calls on Russia to immediately stop the drafting campaign in the occupied Crimea, stop other violations and let Ukraine regain its control over the peninsula. This was reported by the press service of the department.

"From these records it is clear that drafting of Crimean residents to the Russian armed forces contradicts international humanitarian law on a military occupation. We urge Russia to immediately stop the campaign, stop other violations, and let Ukraine regain control over the peninsula. Gross violations of international law must stop," the message says.

The statement notes that the military occupation of Crimea by Russia falls under the provisions of the Fourth Geneva Convention and customary international law applicable to military occupation. Article 51 of the Fourth Geneva Convention states that the occupation authority “shall not force protected persons to serve in its armed or auxiliary forces”.
