Five years ago, the invaders banned the activities of Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people

April 26, 2021

On April 26, 2016, the so-called Supreme Court of Crimea illegally decided to ban the activities of the representative body of the Crimean Tatars – the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people. It was recognized as an extremist organization and banned in the occupied Crimea and the Russian Federation. For the fifth year, the CTRC team, along with reputable international organizations and institutions, has been fighting the illegal decision of the occupants.

With the assistance of the Crimean Tatar Resource Center, 17 individual applications were submitted to the ECHR in connection with the prohibition of the Mejlis from individuals and legal entities. The CTRC team sent materials for Ukrainian lawyers in Ukraine v. Russia case to the UN International Court of Justice.

The Crimean Tatar Resource Center regularly sends reports to the UN Special Rapporteur on the rights of indigenous peoples, the UN Expert Mechanism on the rights of indigenous peoples, the UN Special Rapporteur on the right to peaceful assembly and freedom of association, which indicates the illegality of this decision and Russia's failure to comply with the interim decision International Court of Justice. In addition, representatives of the organization emphasize the illegality of the ban of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people in many appearances at international venues.

We remind that on January 16, 2017, Ukraine launched a case against the Russian Federation in the UN International Court of Justice. Kyiv accuses Moscow of numerous and systematic violations of the International Convention for the Suppression of the Financing of Terrorism and the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination. In April 2017, the UN International Court of Justice decided to apply provisional measures against the actions of the Russian Federation in the occupied Crimea. Thus, the UN court in the Hague obliged the Russian Federation to ensure the activities of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people, but the Russian Federation has not been implementing this decision for the third year now.
