December 16, 2019

The so-called second Simferopol Hizb ut-Tahrir case detainee Shaban Umerov, who is being held in a detention center in Simferopol, had a seizure. This was reported by the Crimean Solidarity media agency with reference to the lawyer Nazim Sheikhmambetov.

The lawyer noted that Shaban Umerov has health problems, aggravated due to the conditions of the pre-trial detention center.

“In the pre-trial detention center, he has been experiencing heartache and burning for a long time, this is accompanied by headaches, dryness in his mouth, chills and complicated breathing. A few weeks ago he had a rather serious seizure. Thanks to his cellmates, he managed to recover a little bit, there was a way out of a critical situation”, – said the lawyer.

The defense parties sent relevant statements to the head of the medical unit of the pre-trial detention center and to the administration of the pre-trial detention center.

“We hope that appropriate work will be carried due to these statements and measures will be taken. In particular, proper medical assistance will be provided to my client Shaban ağa Umerov”, – said the lawyer.

We remind that on March 27, 2019, Russian security forces in occupied Crimea carried out mass searches in 26 Crimean Tatars' dwellings. Literature was seized from some activists, which, according to Crimean Solidarity, was planted by the security forces themselves. In addition to books and brochures, people were confiscated phones, tablets, laptops and passports. Security officials behaved rudely and physically abused the detainees. They entered the houses in shoes as well. Lawyers who arrived at the site of the searches were not allowed to meet their clients. According to the results, 20 people were suspected of their membership in the Hizb ut-Tahrir organization, which is banned in the Russian Federation. On March 28, three more Crimean Tatar activists were detained, in whose dwellings searches were carried out in their absence. The whereabouts of yet another Crimean Tatar – Edem Iaiachikov – remains unknown. On March 27-28, the so-called court arrested all 23 detainees after searches. They  were chosen a preventive measure in the form of detention until May 15. Everyone is accused of membership in the Hizb ut-Tahrir organization banned in the Russian Federation. Later, the Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights, Liudmyla Denisova, reported that the detainees were assigned to five pre-trial detention centers in the Rostov Region. On May 13 and 14, courts in the Rostov Region and occupied Crimea extended the period of arrest for all 24 detained Crimean Tatars until August 15. Then the so-called Kyiv District Court of Simferopol extended the preventive measure in the form of detention until August 15 to the Crimean Tatar activist Raim Ayvazov, detained in April at the Kalanchak checkpoint. He was included in the criminal case of 23 other Crimean Tatars detained on March 27, 2019.
