Left activist Evgeniy Karakashev placed in a prison cell in a Russian colony

Yevpatoria ’s left activist Evgeniy Karakashev , who was sentenced to six years in prison on charges of public calls for terrorist activities for chatting via VKontakte social network, was placed to a prison cell in a Russian colony for a year. The aforementioned was reported by journalist Taras Ibrahimov via his Facebook page.

“The Crimean anarchist, activist from  Yevpatoria    Evgeniy Karakashev  , who is serving a sentence in correctional colony # 1 at the village of Kamenka in Kabardino-Balkaria, was sent to the detention center twice due to far-fetched reasons (in fact for refusing to cooperate with the administration of the colony), and from the 1st of November, he was placed to a prison cell for a year”,- the statement emphasized.

It is noted that the prison cell is a separate cell measuring 2×5 meters, where Karakashev is placed with another prisoner.

In addition to that, on Thursday, the 7th of November, Ievhen wrote a statement to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia on his subsequent renunciation of Russian citizenship.

We remind that  Evgeniy Karakashev  was detained on the 1st of February 2018 after a search of his house on suspicion of extremist statements on social networks (Article 282 Part 2 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (Incitement to hatred or enmity)) and public calls for terrorist activities (Article 205.2 Part 2 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (Public calls for terrorist activities or public justification of terrorism)). On the 2nd of February 2018, the so-called  Yevpatoria City Court of Crimea arrested Karakashev for 2 months. Subsequently, he had his detention regularly prolonged.

According to the prosecution, at the end of 2014, Karakashev in correspondence with Crimean anarchists made statements “containing linguistic and psychological signs of incitement to commit violent and destructive actions (undermining cars, buildings, state authorities)”.

In January 2019, the investigation dropped the charges against Karakashev under Article 282 of Part 2 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (Incitement to hatred or enmity) in due to the partial decriminalization of anti-extremist legislation. Accusations of public calls for terrorist activities were upheld by the investigation.

On the 19th of April 2019, the North Caucasus Military District Court sentenced  Yevpatoria’s left activist  Evgeniy Karakashev   to six years in prison on charges of publicly calling for terrorist activities for chatting via VKontakte social network.
