Denysova: political prisoner Edem Bekirov hospitalized for inpatient examination

On Wednesday, the 21st of August, a political prisoner as well as severely disabled individual Edem Bekirov was taken to the Semashko Hospital, where he was examined by an endocrinologist, neurologist and cardiologist. On the 27th of August he was hospitalized in the Republican Civilian Neurology Hospital for further inpatient examination, which will last approximately 7-8 days. Ukrainian Ombudswoman, Lyudmyla Denysova, reported the aforementioned via her Facebook account, quoting Bekirov’s lawyer.

“Edem Bekirov’s lawyer just claimed that today his client, who is being held in the Simferopol detention facility, was taken to the Semashko Hospital. He was examined by an endocrinologist, neurologist, cardiologist,his blood and urine tests were taken. On Tuesday, the 27th of August, Bekirov’s hospitalization in the Republican Civilian Neurology Hospital for further inpatient examinationis expected, which will last approximately 7-8 days", – the report mentioned.

It is noted that according to the results of the following examinations, a medical commission, which should determine whether Bekirov can be kept in detention, will be convened.

"I hope that according to the results of the examinations, Edem Bekirov will be provided with all the necessary medical assistance, and that his detention will be switched to house arrest”, – added Denysova.

Denysova also noted that since the Russian government initiates the conduct of these very surveys, it might be considered that the second decision of the European Court of Human Rights is being implemented.

We remind that on the 12 th of December, 2018, while trying to enter the Crimea through Chongar checkpoint, Ukrainian national and Crimean Tatar Edem Bekirov, born in 1961, a resident of Novooleksiivka village of the Kherson region,
was arrested by the Russian border guards. He was detained at around 08:30 while undergoing passport control procedures. Until the evening his location remained
unknown.

On the 13 th of December, the so-called Kyiv District Court of Simferopol arrested Edem Bekirov until the 11 th of February 2019. On the 20 th of December the FSB charged him with illegal trafficking of weapons and the illegal transfer, sale, storage, transportation or carriage of explosives (Part 2 of Article 222 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation and Part 2 of Article 222.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation).

On the 6 th of June 2019, the so-called Kyiv District Court of Simferopol once again extended his detention term until the 12 th of August.

On the 11th of June, the European Court of Human Rights decided to urgently place Edem Bekirov in the hospital.

On the 10th of July, the European Court of Human Rights issued a new decision considering Edem Bekirov, according to which independent and specialized doctors should conduct a medical examination and eventually prepare separate, detailed conclusions on each of his health problems.  

Edem Bekirov is one of the Crimean Tatar public activists of the village Novooleksiivka village. He is severely disabled. In January 2018, he underwent a complicated heart surgery, during which he had 4 shunts implanted. Moreover, the man is an amputee having his right leg removed below the knee and thus forced to
wear a removable cast.
