The political prisoner Edem Bekirov, who is contained in the medical unit of the detention facility No. 1 of Simferopol, has deteriorated health. For the last four days he had the strongest convulsions by far that cause him a great deal of physical pain, he is even unable to sleep. Moreover, he has persistent heart problems. This is reported by Krym.Realii media resource with reference to Bekirov’s lawyer Olexii Ladin.
"The last four days he had severe cramps that caused him a great deal of great physical pain, he is unable to sleep. Moreover, he has persistent heart problems. Last month he had severe arrhythmia. Due to the slightest physical exertion, like, for example, getting up, picking up the broom, arrhythmia worsens and blood pressure increases. Because of this, he is forced to remain in bed", – said the lawyer.
According to the lawyer, periodically, Bekirov does not eat anything in order to regulate blood sugar levels due to his diabetes.
"He is extremely worried about the level of sugar, despite the fact that he was given a dose of insulin, his blood sugar levels is still too high. He tries to regulate the level of sugar by starving himself, but it usually leads to severe malnutrition and sugar drops critically to an extremely low level", – he explained.
Moreover, according to the relatives of Edem Bekirov, they are unable to pass him the necessary medications that he has needs.
“According to his daughter, for two days she couldn’t give Edem Bekirov any medicines. Yesterday his diabetes and heart pills ran out. The doctor of the medical unit denies this information by emphasizing that every day the detainees take all the medicines. Today Bekirov's daughter will once again try to pass the medicines. According to Edem Bekirov, when his health condition deteriorates he is trying to call medical workers, however, he has never succeeded in doing it. There is no access to the medical staff in this medical unit”, – the lawyer outlined.
Earlier, on the 15th of July, Ukrainian Ombudswoman Liudmyla Denysova and Russian Ombudswoman Tetiana Moskal'kova agreed to provide an independent medical examination to five Ukrainian political prisoners – Edem Bekirov, Volodymyr Balukh, Volodymyr Dudka, Pavlo Hryb and Stanislav Klykh.
We remind that on the 12 th of December, 2018, while trying to enter the Crimea through Chongar checkpoint, Ukrainian national and Crimean Tatar Edem Bekirov, born in 1961, a resident of Novooleksiivka village of the Kherson region, was arrested by the Russian border guards. He was detained at around 08:30 while undergoing passport control procedures. Until the evening his location remained unknown.
On the 13 th of December, the so-called Kyiv District Court of Simferopol arrested Edem Bekirov until the 11 th of February 2019. On the 20 th of December the FSB charged him with illegal trafficking of weapons and the illegal transfer, sale, storage, transportation or carriage of explosives (Part 2 of Article 222 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation and Part 2 of Article 222.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation).
On the 6 th of June 2019, the so-called Kyiv District Court of Simferopol once again extended his detention term until the 12 th of August.
On June 11, the European Court of Human Rights decided to urgently place Edem Bekirov in the hospital.
On July 10, the European Court of Human Rights issued a new decision considering Edem Bekirov, according to which independent and specialized doctors should conduct a medical examination and eventually prepare separate, detailed conclusions on each of his health problems.
Edem Bekirov is one of the Crimean Tatar public activists of the village Novooleksiivka village. He is severely disabled. In January 2018, he underwent a complicated heart surgery, during which he had 4 shunts implanted. Moreover, the man is an amputee having his right leg removed below the knee and thus forced to wear a removable prosthesis.
