7 years ago it became known about the murder of Reshat Ametov – a symbol of the struggle for Crimea

March 15, 2021

Reshat Ametov is the first victim of the Russian occupants in Crimea. On March 3, 2014, Reshat Ametov was abducted by unknown persons in camouflage uniforms in the center of Simferopol, where he held a solitary picket against the occupation of Crimea. The body of a man was found on March 15 in a field in the village of Zemlianychne, Bilohirsk District, with stab wounds in the left eye socket and other numerous bodily injuries. The head was tied with duct tape, and there were handcuffs on his hands. He is survived by three young children.

In April of the same year, the Investigative Committee of the Investigative Department of the Russian Federation for the Republic of Crimea opened a criminal case into the murder of Reshat Ametov. In 2015, the case was suspended. The so-called investigation never identified the persons involved in the murder of Reshat Ametov.

The UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine stated that it received information that indicates the involvement of the Crimean self-defense in the disappearance and murder of Reshat Ametov. The same opinion was expressed by Eskender Bariiev, member of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people, Head of the Board of the CTRC, who noted that no one investigated the so-called case, since everything indicates that it was an order of the leaders of the so-called self-defense. He also added that Reshat Ametov is a symbol of the 2014 struggle for the integrity of Ukraine against Russian aggression.

In May 2017, the fifth President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko signed a decree conferring the title of Hero of Ukraine to Reshat Ametov.
