The European Union published a statement on the seventh anniversary of the occupation of Crimea, in which it called on the Russian Federation to stop violations of human rights in the occupied Crimea, to release political prisoners of the peninsula, and also to lift the ban on the activities of Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people. This was reported by the press service of the department.
It is noted that seven years after the violent and illegal annexation of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol by the Russian Federation, the European Union remains firmly committed to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders.
“The inhabitants of the peninsula face systematic restrictions of their fundamental freedoms, such as freedom of expression, religion or belief and association, as well as the right to peaceful assembly. Journalists, human rights defenders and lawyers face interference and intimidation in their work. Crimean Tatars continue to face unacceptable harassment, pressure and gross violations of their rights. Crimean Tatars, Ukrainians and all ethnic and religious communities on the peninsula should be provided with the opportunity to preserve and develop their culture, education, identity and traditions of cultural heritage, which are currently threatened by illegal annexation”,- the statement said.
