On April 24, as part of the 25th session of the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues, the Crimean Tatar Resource Center, in collaboration with the Permanent Mission of Ukraine to the United Nations and the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People, will host a side on the topic: \u201cEnsuring the Rights of Indigenous Peoples in the Context of Inter-State Conflicts.\u201d<\/p>\n
During the discussion, participants will address the systematic violations of the rights of the indigenous Crimean Tatar people resulting from Russia\u2019s armed aggression against Ukraine, which began with the occupation of Crimea in 2014 and escalated into a full-scale invasion in 2022.<\/p>\n
Particular attention will be paid to the persecution of community leaders and activists, the ban of the Mejlis as the representative body of the Crimean Tatar people, illegal conscription, the militarization of Crimea, and the shrinking space for civic participation.<\/p>\n
A separate section will address the war\u2019s impact on the physical and mental health of the indigenous Crimean Tatar people. It will cover the consequences of infrastructure destruction, environmental damage, political persecution, unlawful detentions, torture, forced displacement and limited access to medical services.<\/p>\n
Participants will also discuss the challenge of realizing the Crimean Tatar people\u2019s right to self-determination amid an ongoing interstate conflict; the right of indigenous peoples to govern through their own representative bodies under conditions of prohibition, occupation, and war; the role of indigenous peoples in peacebuilding processes to achieve a sustainable and just peace and mechanisms for their protection in conflict situations, as well as the impact of war on ecosystems and the health of indigenous peoples.<\/p>\n
