On Thursday, December 11, employees of the occupation Center \u201cE\u201d in Crimea came with \u201coperational actions\u201d to the premises where lawyers Edem Semedlyaev, Emil Kurbedinov, as well as lawyers Nazim Sheikhmambetov, Elvina Semedlyaeva, Rustem Kamilov, and Lilia Hemedzhi.<\/p>\n
According to Crimean Solidarity, the actions of the security forces are being coordinated by Ruslan Shambazov, head of the so-called Center for Countering Extremism.<\/p>\n
At the moment, Edem Semedlyaev, Nazim Sheikhmambetov, Lilia Hemedzhi, and Rustem Kamilov are in the premises. The occupiers are not allowing lawyer Emil Kurbedinov into the office.<\/p>\n
The Crimean Tatar Resource Center condemns these actions by the Russian security forces. Pressure on lawyers is a direct violation of the right to defense and further proof that basic legal norms do not apply on the occupied peninsula. These persecutions are systematic and aimed at isolating Crimean political prisoners from qualified legal assistance and intimidating the human rights community.<\/p>\n
UPDATE: Russian security forces received the order to conduct an \u201cinspection\u201d of the Crimean human rights defenders’ office after an appeal by Dmitry Nesterov, deputy chief of the Russian police in occupied Crimea. The permission was issued by the so-called deputy chairman of the Supreme \u201cCourt\u201d of Crimea, Viktor Sklyarov.<\/p>\n
The occupation \u201cFeminida\u201d stated that the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs allegedly has grounds to believe that lawyers from the Crimean Central Bar Association, including Emil Kurbedinov and Edem Semedlyaev, may be involved in crimes under Articles 205.5, 205. 1, and 199 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation.<\/p>\n
“According to the information provided, the above-mentioned persons use this premises for work and other activities. <…> It may contain paper and electronic media confirming the fact of their possible illegal activities, as well as items, products, and substances withdrawn from civil circulation. <…> The Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Crimea has provided sufficient evidence to substantiate the validity of the request [to conduct an inspection],\u201c the \u201dcourt” ruling states.<\/p>\n
During the \u201csearch,\u201d law enforcement officers seized Kurbedinov and Semedlyaev’s attorney agreements, their warrants, and Kurbedinov’s attorney seal.<\/p>\n
