Eskender Bariiev, Chairman of the Board of the Crimean Tatar Resource Center and member of the Presidium of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People, spoke about the persecution of two brothers, Volodymyr and Oleksii Settarov, who were convicted for participating in the activities of the Noman Chelebidzhihan Battalion.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think that in any civilized country in the world, it is unheard of that a person who has not been arrested without trial or investigation on the day of his immediate detention would end up on the lists of terrorists and extremists. However, this is exactly what happens in Russia,\u201d – stressed the human rights activist.<\/p>\n

We are talking about two brothers from the Razdolnensky district, which, according to Ukrainian law, is part of the Perekopsky district of occupied Crimea. According to Bariiev, they were arrested for allegedly participating in the activities of the Crimean Tatar battalion named after Noman Chelebidzhihan on the mainland of Ukraine.<\/p>\n

“At the age of 24, Oleksiy was sentenced on October 23, 2023, to five years in a strict regime colony, with the first year to be served in prison. His younger brother Volodymyr, who was only 22 at the time of sentencing, was sentenced on November 22, 2023, to five and a half years in a strict regime colony, with the first year to be served in prison and one year of administrative supervision after release,” – Bariiev said.<\/p><\/div>\n

\nHe noted that the FSB’s detention of the brothers was groundless\u2014they were simply working in a field, and their relatives were not informed of their whereabouts for several days.<\/p>\n

“For five days, the FSB did not provide any information to their relatives, actively trying to extract the testimony they wanted. After recording the desired content, voiced by one of the brothers, it was only on May 29, 2023, that it became known that the men had been arrested and, by decision of the Kyiv court in Crimea, they had been taken into custody for two months,” – he explained.<\/p>\n

The basis for taking the brothers into custody was photographs and information from some secret witnesses that from January to March 2019, the young men participated in the civil blockade of Crimea as part of the Noman Chelebidzhihan Battalion, which was headed at the time by Lenur Islyamov.<\/p>\n

Bariiev emphasized that the case was heard with violations: no one really tried to figure out what happened, and the occupation courts acted on orders from above.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe case materials resemble a complete mess. This is a case where the hands don’t know what the legs are doing, or where the judges are just as confused as the secret witnesses in the case. It wouldn’t be so funny if people weren’t going to be behind bars for many years,\u201d the human rights activist emphasized.<\/p>\n

According to him, the brothers were forced to slander themselves and give false testimony against each other.<\/p><\/div>\n

\u00a0 To falsify evidence, the FSB also used fake testimony from their relatives who had previously been convicted in the same case, the cousins Artur, Arsen, and Ablyamet Memedshayev.<\/div>\n

\u201cThis is how entire families become victims of the occupation policy aimed at combating dissent, freedom of speech, and religion,\u201d – Bariiev added.<\/p>\n

According to the Crimean Tatar Resource Center, 70 Ukrainian citizens were arrested for participating in the Noman Chelebidzhihan Battalion: 21 in occupied Crimea and 49 in occupied Kherson Oblast after February 24, 2022.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
