Recently, all of Russia’s central media outlets, as well as pro-Russian Crimean websites, simultaneously \u201cexploded with a breaking news \u201d: hackers had allegedly gained access to the Crimean Tatar Resource Center’s data.<\/p>\n

The perpetrator of this \u201coperation\u201d was the Russian group KillNet, known for its DoS attacks on NATO government agencies during Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.<\/p>\n

The Russian media immediately picked up on the \u201cnews\u201d and began competing in fabrications. Here are just some of the \u201cheadlines\u201d that appeared in Kremlin publications:<\/p>\n

\u201cCrimean Tatar Resource Center* collects data on Crimean residents\u201d
\n\u201cKillNet: \u2018Crimean Tatar Resource Center\u2019* corresponds with Western curators\u201d
\n\u201cHackers uncover correspondence between Western curators and the \u2018Crimean Tatar Resource Center\u2019\u201d
\n\u201cThe Crimean Tatar Resource Center* was preparing a provocation with leaflets.\u201d
\nIn other words, the Russian media, which regularly \u201cdoes not see\u201d violent abductions, torture, or illegal convictions of Crimean Tatars, suddenly decided to give the CTRC free advertising to an audience of 145 million people.<\/p>\n

Free promotion is always nice, especially when human rights activities hurt propaganda so much.<\/p>\n

And what angered them the most?<\/p>\n

The occupiers pointed out that \u201cthe scandalous organization is known for proposing to rename the cities and villages of Crimea, indicating this not only in Ukrainian documents, but also on maps on the Internet.\u201d<\/p><\/div>\n

And here’s the most interesting part. Putin himself has repeatedly said that he will \u201ctake care of the Crimean Tatars\u201d and that \u201cRussia will restore the historical place names of Crimea.\u201d But in reality, as soon as the conversation turns to Crimean Tatar names, language, or history, the reaction is always the same:<\/p>\n

Russians are even fighting against the Latin alphabet. In Crimea, they are putting up posters quoting federal \u201claws on the state language and advertising.\u201d These laws state that all inscriptions must be in Russian only, and that the Latin alphabet is only allowed in registered trademarks. Any signs or inscriptions with Latin letters are now considered \u201chostile.\u201d Business owners are receiving official warnings.<\/p>\n

It seems that the Soviet era has returned\u2014now even language can become a \u201cthreat to national security.\u201d<\/p>\n

Therefore, when the Russian media simultaneously launches fake news about \u201cWestern curators,\u201d \u201cleaflets,\u201d and \u201ctoponymy,\u201d it means only one thing \u2014 the Crimean Tatar Resource Center is telling the truth that they are afraid to hear.<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
