In temporarily occupied Crimea, the Russian Orthodox Church, with the assistance of the occupation authorities, is used as a tool for personal data collection, religious pressure and military propaganda. “This letter of the so-called \u2018metropolitan\u2019 testifies about several important points. First, such activity and activism of a religious figure is a violation of the right to privacy. After all, he encourages leaders to compile lists of people who do not have children and to find out the reasons – why exactly. This is personal information that a person is not obliged to disclose – neither to an employer nor to anyone else.
\nThe question of whether or not to have children, for what reasons, is a purely personal matter for each person. It may be due to a medical condition, personal beliefs, or other circumstances. And this is something that does not concern either the employer or outsiders, if the person himself does not want to disclose it. Sharing such details is a person’s right, not an obligation,” emphasized Liudmyla Korotkykh.<\/p>\n

Of particular concern is the call in the same letter to hold meetings with families practicing Islam and encourage them to get married so that their children are born into Orthodox families.<\/p>\n

“The second point concerns what this letter says about the call to hold meetings with married couples professing another faith. This is also a violation of the right to freedom of religion and freedom of thought. It is also an invasion of privacy to try to force a person to change their faith or religion. It is also a violation – in fact, a violation of a person’s fundamental rights and freedoms, their individual rights. It is therefore a very worrying signal, – noted the lawyer of the CTRC.<\/p><\/div>\n

\nKorotkykh emphasizes that this initiative is another evidence of the Russian state’s attempts to destroy the Crimean Tatar identity, since the majority of Muslims in Crimea are Crimean Tatars.<\/p>\n

In her opinion, the church in Crimea is actually used as a tool of Russian policy, including military mobilization.<\/p>\n

“And this also shows that the Russian Church has a very big influence, and it is not so much a religious association, but a tool that Russia uses to promote its policy and impose its own ideology. Also, based on this letter and the fact that much attention is paid not only to the issue of war, but also to the issue of fertility, we can talk about the existence in Russia of a certain demographic problem among the Slavic population. Russia is suffering significant losses in the war against Ukraine, which it itself unleashed. This once again emphasizes the scale of the demographic crisis. And judging by this letter, we see that the occupiers through the church are agitating people to go to war, to join the Russian army in the name of God. That is, the church is used here as a tool of agitation and militarization of the population,” – Korotkykh concluded.<\/p>\n
