The two events \u2014 \u201cIndigenous Peacebuilding: Pathways towards Healing People, for Peace and Planet\u201d and \u201cGlobal Strategy Meeting for International Decade of Indigenous Humanitarian Peacebuilding 2025-2035\u201d \u2014 resulted in landmark decisions and declarations that will guide Indigenous peace work for generations to end wars and conflicts globally. Currently 107 wars are raging in the world displacing 200 million people globally and 80 percent of the conflicts are happening in biodiversity regions of the world where Indigenous Peoples live. Key outcomes of the landmark events included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Recognizing the landmark UN General Assembly Resolution A\/79\/455 recognizing the role of Indigenous Peoples in conflict prevention, resolution, and sustaining peace. This resolution marks a first step toward integrating Indigenous knowledge, traditions, and governance systems into global peacebuilding frameworks.<\/li>\n<li>A Call for a Secretary General\u2019s Report and call for a United Nations Decade on Indigenous Peacebuilding (2026\u20132035) to recognize and support the vital role of Indigenous Peoples in conflict resolution and reconciliation processes.<\/li>\n<li>Launch of the International Declaration on Indigenous Peacebuilding: The Declaration outlines fundamental principles and strategies rooted in Indigenous knowledge systems, emphasizing historical knowledge, cultural, traditional mediation practices practiced by Indigenous Peoples globally.<\/li>\n<li>Recognition of Indigenous Peace Women and Peace Mothers:<br \/>\nFor the first time at the UN, call to recognize Indigenous Peace Women and Peace Mothers for their critical contributions to conflict prevention, community mediation, and healing processes, acknowledging their leadership in restoring and sustaining peace.<\/li>\n<li>Highlighting the link between conflict, environmental violence and biodiversity: Participants stressed that over 80 percent of today\u2019s global conflicts are occurring in biodiversity-rich regions where Indigenous Peoples live, underscoring that Indigenous peacebuilding is essential for protecting both human rights and the health of the planet.<\/li>\n<li>Call for recognizing conflicts in Indigenous territories and Indigenous Peacebuilding as a key international peace and security issue.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-273567\" src=\"https:\/\/ctrcenter.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/photo_2025-05-06-18.26.11.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"250\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ctrcenter.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/photo_2025-05-06-18.26.11.jpeg 800w, https:\/\/ctrcenter.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/photo_2025-05-06-18.26.11-393x123.jpeg 393w, https:\/\/ctrcenter.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/photo_2025-05-06-18.26.11-768x240.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/ctrcenter.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/photo_2025-05-06-18.26.11-300x94.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/ctrcenter.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/photo_2025-05-06-18.26.11-600x188.jpeg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The UN General Assembly Resolution is built on the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), adopted in 2007. UNDRIP calls that the resolution of conflicts and disputes involving Indigenous Peoples should consider Indigenous Peoples\u2019 traditions and legal systems.\u00a0The work on UNGA Resolution is also equally built on work of many including the historic First Global Summit on Indigenous Peacebuilding was held on 11 &amp; 12 April 2024 in Washington DC where 120 Indigenous leaders, elders, women and youth gathered from 30 countries belonging to seven socio-cultural regions of the world. Following the historic Summit, an International Declaration on Indigenous Peacebuilding was adopted and signed and led to the formation of the Global Network of Indigenous Peacebuilders, Mediators and Negotiators.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Opening prayers and remarks on both days of the event were done by\u00a0<strong>Wakerahk\u00e1htste Louise McDonald Herne,\u00a0<\/strong>Bear Clan Mother, Mohawk Nation Council.\u00a0In the words of\u00a0<strong>Binalakshmi Nepram,<\/strong>\u00a0Founder-Director of Manipur Women Gun Survivors Network who along with many are working on the Indigenous Peacebuilding leaders, elders, women and youth stated, \u201cWith hundreds of conflicts happening in the world today in biodiversity regions where Indigenous Peoples live, our collective work on Indigenous Peacebuilding is pivotal for ensuring peace, healing and planetary health. Violence in our lands is unacceptable and the wars must end.\u2019<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Dr. Albert Barume,\u00a0<\/strong>the UN Special Rapporteur on Indigenous Rights also\u00a0highlighted that peace and international security are deeply linked to Indigenous rights and Indigenous peoples are often denied access to their rights, wrongly labeled as extremists by states and excluded from security discussions.\u00a0He also\u00a0emphasized that recognizing self-determination, land ownership, and cultural rights would strengthen international peace and security and reiterated that it is important to bring the matter to the Security Council.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Ambassador Jose Alberto Briz Gutierrez\u00a0<\/strong>from Guatemala Mission to the UN formally launched the booklet, International Declaration on Indigenous Peacebuilding, calling it a &#8220;very special occasion&#8221; for Indigenous Peoples globally. He emphasized the triple planetary crisis of climate, biodiversity and pollution and underlines how Indigenous practices are essential to solutions. He shared examples of Guatemala\u2019s peace process that showed the critical role of Indigenous Peoples in building inclusive democracies.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Ambassador Justin Mohamed from Australia\u00a0<\/strong>in his remarks said that<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Indigenous Australians were the region\u2019s first diplomats and peacebuilders and called for integrating Indigenous governance and conflict resolution practices into formal frameworks.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Ambassador Graciela G\u00f3mez,<\/strong>\u00a0Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs also spoke about the creation of the Women Peacebuilders Network and development of local-level mediation and collective conflict resolution frameworks, justice initiatives to build sustainable peace. She also apoke about\u00a0women\u2019s peace networks that will serve as the foundation for the development of the\u00a0<em>Weavers of the Nation<\/em>\u00a0Strategy (<em>Tejedoras de la Patria<\/em>) to ensure access to well-being and the full exercise of the rights of Indigenous women.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Awa Dabo\u00a0<\/strong>from the UN Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs spoke about how the UN<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Resolution A\/79\/455 marks a pivotal shift recognizing Indigenous Peoples as agents of peace and she emphasized that empowering Indigenous women and youth in peace processes presents a critical opportunity for change.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Tarcila Rivera Zea\u00a0<\/strong>from Chirapaq, Peru in her statement<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>insisted that peace must include a spiritual, territorial, and bodily dimension, particularly for Indigenous women and shared personal reflections on how decades of internal conflict have shaped Indigenous women&#8217;s movements in Peru.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Prof. Elsa Stamatopoulou\u00a0<\/strong>from Columbia University<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>stressed that Indigenous participation rights are critical for peacebuilding and called for Indigenous peacebuilders, particularly women and youth, to be included in all relevant UN forums like the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Elsa also<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>advocated for a Programme of Action to prepare a strategic Indigenous peacebuilding plan before states act.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Kenneth Deer\u00a0<\/strong>from Mohawk Nation<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>shared teachings from the Great Law of Peace and spoke about diplomacy through good words, consensus-building, and rational dialogue.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>He emphasized non-violence, patience, and the central role of women in restoring peace and governance.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Several eminent speakers also attended from conflict zones around the world from Mali, Sahel Region, Nuba Mountains, Sudan, Congo, Tanzania. Bolivia, Mexico, Papua New Guinea, USA, Philippines, Chittagong Hill Tracts, Siberia, Geneva, Ukraine, Peru, Canada, Kenya and \u00a0many other regions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Eskender Bariiev,<\/strong> Chairman of the Board of the Crimean Tatar Resource Center, member of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people, reminded in his speech that Russia has started one of the most horrific wars of the 21st century &#8211; against Ukraine. He emphasized the importance of adherence to the UN Charter and international law for achieving peace and sustainable development.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eskender Bariiev emphasized that decisions regarding indigenous lands cannot be made without their participation and called for a global study of the participation of indigenous peoples in peacebuilding processes, the proclamation of the \u201cInternational Decade of Indigenous Peoples&#8217; Peacebuilding\u201d by the UN and world governments, as well as the creation of a universal \u201cpeace formula\u201d on behalf of the Global Network of Indigenous Peacebuilders and the holding of a World Peace Conference to adopt it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Liudmyla Korotkykh<\/strong>, lawyer of the Crimean Tatar Resource Center, emphasized the importance of indigenous peoples&#8217; participation in peacebuilding processes. She noted that there can be no lasting peace without indigenous peoples at the negotiating table.
