For three months his family did not know where he was &#8211; Appaz was kept in the basements of the Crimean pre-trial detention center, deprived of the right to call and contact with the outside world. He was later transferred to Crimea, where he was sentenced to a long prison term on trumped-up charges.<span class=\"im\"><\/p>\n<p>The reason for such a cruel punishment was the transfer of 500 hryvnias to his classmate from Turkey, who at the time, as it turned out, was serving in the volunteer battalion \u2018Crimea\u2019. The occupation authorities used this fact as an excuse to accuse Appaz of \u2018financing terrorism\u2019. Despite all the attempts of the defence, the court sessions were just a formality &#8211; not a single instance changed the verdict, all the decisions were the same, as if rewritten according to a template.<\/p>\n<p><\/span>Moreover, in 2023, the occupiers later arrested his father, businessman Halil Kurtamet, as well, illegally depriving the family of their property, assets and business.<span class=\"im\"><\/p>\n<p>In September 2023, Appaz was transferred to the infamous Vladimirsky Central prison in Russia, where he ended up in a cell with another Crimean political prisoner, 29-year-old Bohdan Ziza. Ziza was sentenced to 15 years for a daring act &#8211; he painted the occupation administration building in Kezlev (Yevpatoria) in the colours of the Ukrainian flag. Together they are serving their sentences, remaining without the right to call their families.<\/p>\n<p>Appaz Kurtamet, who has not been able to see his mother in two years, believes he will be exchanged and return home. Despite the harsh conditions, the boy does not give up &#8211; he reads a lot and studies English so that after his release he can go to university and get a higher education in the field of engineering technology.<\/p>\n<p><\/span>Appaz&#8217;s mother, as well as all his relatives and acquaintances hope for a speedy exchange and release of the guy from the Russian prison. The Crimean Tatar Resource Center in its turn continues to actively work for the release of Appaz Kurtamet and all other political prisoners of Crimea.<span class=\"im\"><\/p>\n<p>Everyone can support Appaz by sending a letter in his name to the address: 600020, Vladimir region, Vladimir, Bolshaya Nizhegorodskaya street, 67, FKU T-2 of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia in Vladimir region, Kurtamet Appaz Khalilovich, born in 2002.
