The large-scale terrorist attacks in France, the UK, Syria, the US and Ukraine show that terrorism remains a worldwide problem. Thousands of people suffer and die as a result of terrorist actions. However, victims of terrorist attacks are often forgotten, despite the fact that they need active support and assistance.<\/p>\n

Since 2014, the beginning of the temporary occupation of Crimea, the Russian Federation has been actively fighting \u2018terrorism\u2019 and \u2018extremism\u2019. But in reality it is a tool to suppress the non-violent resistance of the indigenous Crimean Tatar people and pro-Ukrainian activists who have spoken out against the occupation of their homeland.<\/p>\n

For a position or opinion that differs from the official position of the de facto authorities in Crimea, people are accused of terrorism or extremism.<\/p>\n

The most common tool used to combat Crimean Tatar and Ukrainian activists opposing the actions of the de facto authorities in Crimea has been the initiation of criminal cases under Article 205.5 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (Organisation of activities of a terrorist organisation and participation in the activities of such an organisation). During the entire period of occupation, 117 people were prosecuted for alleged participation in the Hizb ut-Tahrir organisation.<\/p>\n

Another tool for persecuting dissent is Article 282.2 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (Organisation of activities of an extremist organisation), which is used against followers of the Jehovah’s Witnesses.<\/p>\n

<\/span>In addition, the peninsula actively uses repression against the indigenous Crimean Tatar people, using Article 280.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (Public calls for actions aimed at violating the territorial integrity of the Russian Federation). The Chairman of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people and members of\u00a0 Mejlis are prosecuted under this article. And the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people itself was recognised as an extremist organisation and banned on 26 April 2016.<\/p>\n

But despite such an active \u2018fight against terrorism and extremism\u2019, there are more and more victims of terror on the peninsula. According to the Crimean Tatar Resource Centre, during the entire period of occupation, the number of deaths reached 60, 30 of which were victims of terror (8 Crimean Tatars).<\/p>\n

<\/span>One of the most tragic examples of a terrorist act in the occupied Crimea is the Kerch terrorist attack on 17 October 2018, when there was a shooting and explosion at the Kerch Polytechnic College. 21 people died, more than fifty were injured.<\/p>\n

It is worth noting that such cases were recorded only after the occupation of Crimea by the Russian Federation. But unfortunately, after the start of a full-scale Russian-Ukrainian war in 2022, the situation worsened significantly. Thousands of people in Ukraine have died at the hands of the occupiers. Russia is a real terrorist country.<\/p>\n

In connection with this situation, the Crimean Tatar Resource Centre demands:<\/p>\n

– to stop the practice of applying its own criminal legislation in the occupied territory;<\/p>\n

– to refrain from criminalisation and administrative prosecution of actions aimed at expressing one’s own opinion;<\/p>\n

<\/span>– to stop the illegal persecution of representatives of the indigenous Crimean Tatar people and pro-Ukrainian activists under the guise of fighting terrorism and extremism;<\/p>\n

– to release all political prisoners persecuted on ethnic and religious grounds.<\/p><\/div>\n
