{"id":261151,"date":"2024-08-09T17:55:33","date_gmt":"2024-08-09T14:55:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ctrcenter.org\/a-briefing-on-the-occasion-of-the-international-day-of-the-worlds-indigenous-peoples-was-held-in-kyiv"},"modified":"2024-08-28T15:24:59","modified_gmt":"2024-08-28T12:24:59","slug":"a-briefing-on-the-occasion-of-the-international-day-of-the-worlds-indigenous-peoples-was-held-in-kyiv","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ctrcenter.org\/en\/a-briefing-on-the-occasion-of-the-international-day-of-the-worlds-indigenous-peoples-was-held-in-kyiv","title":{"rendered":"A briefing on the occasion of the International Day of the World&#8217;s Indigenous Peoples was held in Kyiv"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>On Friday, 9 August, the Ukrainian Crisis Media Centre in Kyiv hosted a briefing on the occasion of the International Day of the World&#8217;s Indigenous Peoples \u2018Indigenous Peoples: between preserving identity and challenges in the face of Russian aggression\u2019.<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li><span class=\"im\">Speakers were:\n<p>Viktor Yelensky, Chairman of the State Service of Ukraine on Ethno-politics and Freedom of Conscience.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"im\"><br \/>\nAkhtem Chiygoz, Ukrainian Crimean Tatar politician, Deputy Chairman of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><\/li>\n<li>Eskender Bariiev, Chairman of the Board of the Crimean Tatar Resource Centre (CTRC).<\/li>\n<li><span class=\"im\"><br \/>\nYelizaveta Litvinchuk, member of the Public Organisation \u2018Union of Karaites of Ukraine\u2019.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"im\"><br \/>\nVyacheslav Lombroso, Deputy Chairman of the International Public Organisation \u2018Fund for Research and Support of Indigenous Peoples of Crimea\u2019, representative of the Crimean Tatar indigenous people of Ukraine (online).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"im\"><br \/>\nSires Bolyaen (Alexander Bolkin), an elder of the Erzya people &#8211; inyazor of the Erzya people, chairman of the Erzya society in Ukraine \u2018\u011arz\u00e4\u0144 val\u2019 (\u2018Erzya word\u2019).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"im\"><br \/>\nDenis Kovalev (Moksha name: Ch\u00f3vganon D\u00f3nisi), PhD, Chairman of the Moksha National Committee, Member of the Presidium of the League of Free Nations, Director of the Ukrainian Anatoliy Ryabov Centre for Finno-Ugric Studies (online).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"im\"><br \/>\nYuriy Radchenko, Head of the Department of Crimean Tatar and Eastern Philology of the Vladimir Vernadsky Tauride National University, Director of the Centre for the Study of Interethnic Relations in Eastern Europe.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span class=\"im\"><br \/>\nDuring the event, attendees discussed how Russian aggression has affected the lives and cultures of indigenous peoples, considered the challenges faced by indigenous peoples in their struggle to preserve their identity, and discussed the importance of international support for the protection of indigenous peoples&#8217; rights.<\/p>\n<p><\/span>Eskender Bariiev spoke about the difficult path to the recognition of Crimean Tatars as an indigenous people of Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"im\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ctrcenter.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/photo_2024-08-09-17.53.23.jpeg\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ctrcenter.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/photo_2024-08-09-17.53.24.jpeg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"im\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ctrcenter.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/photo_2024-08-09-17.53.22.jpeg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u2018Crimean Tatars were officially recognised as the indigenous people of Ukraine only in 2014 after the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people as a representative body appealed to the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, appealed to the entire Ukrainian people, supported the territorial integrity of Ukraine, the sovereignty of Ukraine and in the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Crimean Tatars were defined officially as the indigenous people of Ukraine and representative bodies official in Ukraine,\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n<p>But only in 2021 the law \u2018On Indigenous Peoples of Ukraine\u2019 was adopted. And just an indicator of the effectiveness of this law was Putin&#8217;s hysterical reaction.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"im\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ctrcenter.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/photo_2024-08-09-17.53.25.jpeg\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u2018As part of the work of the SSUEPFC, there is also an expert council on the implementation of the Law \u2018On Indigenous Peoples\u2019. There is a public council, where representatives of indigenous peoples participate, with which we have worked together to develop procedures, i.e. by-laws to make this law work, but this work has not yet been finalised. According to our calculations, we need 17 by-laws for the law to be effective.
